NEW INCUBATOR MAKES DRAMATIC DIFFERENCE IN PUPPY CARE POST C-SECTION
Submitted by Dr. Kaylee Long, Reproductive Specialist, Dunckel Veterinary Hospital
Dunckel Veterinary Hospital recently received a new incubator. Newborn puppies need a few basic things after birth.
First, they need to be warm and dry. The incubator provides an even and safe form of heat that warms their entire body (including internal structures) versus just their top or belly like pads and lamps do.
Second, they need oxygen. Once their body temperature is regulated, their respiratory center is stimulated, and this incubator provides a safe concentration of oxygen leading to neurological stimulation and drive to nurse. When this happens, it stimulates gut movement.
Third, they need moisture/humidity. This is hardest to maintain, but the incubator regulates an optimal level of humidity to ensure that their uniquely high body water level is maintained.
These three things lead to thriving newborns. Saving lives is cool!
